Your passive war risk coverage queries answered

1. What is passive war?
Passive war means an insured person is unintentionally or involuntarily exposed to risks related to war. They are not actively involved in any war or war events as defined in the policy’s Terms and Conditions, but may be affected simply by being in a place where these events happen.
2. What is meant by “war” or “war event”?
War or war event refers to any organized conflict, whether officially declared or not. This includes actions such as terrorism, the forceful overthrow or influence of a government or ruling body, or popular or military uprisings like invasions, mutiny, insurrection, rebellion, or riots.
3. Where does passive war coverage apply?
You are covered for passive war in these situations:
- In the country or zone where you are officially a resident.
- If you traveled to a country or zone for personal or business reasons before hostilities started, you remain covered even if the area is later declared a red zone.
- When returning to your home country, coverage applies even if it has been declared a red zone.
For travel advice and details about coverage, zones, etc. please refer to Foreign travel advice - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice)
4. What are the war-related exclusions?
- Claims arising from the use of nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons are excluded.
- Coverage does not apply if a member is actively involved in war or warlike events, including being called to active military duty.
5. If an employee is recalled to military service, will they still be covered?
No, coverage does not apply if an employee is recalled to active military service. When a member actively participates in military service, their status changes from passive war to active war, and active war is excluded from our policy benefits.
6. If a claim arises from falling debris or shrapnel, is it covered under the accident related benefits?
Yes, both death and disability resulting from accidents involving falling debris or shrapnel are covered under accident related benefits.
7. If a death occurs due to a passive war-related event, will we pay the double indemnity benefit?
Yes, in such cases, both the Group Life and Accidental Death benefits will be paid.
8. Is passive war covered only under the Group Life Benefit?
No, passive war is covered under all benefits Zurich offers. This includes Accidental Death (AD), Permanent Partial Total Disability (PPTD), Temporary Total Disability (TTD), and others for accidental claims.
